comments: This cue is part of the underscore for Palm, a dramatic short by director Yimin Chen. In this scene, a man drifts to sleep and has a very symbolic and abstract dream about his wife, her personality, their relationship, and the distractions in his own life that seem to have come between them. The scene ends as he wakes.

This scene required very sparse, abstract music, with very little structure. It's a dream, after all, and the music really had to reflect that, without giving away to the viewer how the dream should be interpreted. Yet at the same time, there are things in the dream that needed to be highlighted in subtle ways. There are traces of musical color here and there, but they are just fleeting moments in the overall mistiness of the dream and the soundworld that represents it.
